Twitter pays tribute to Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene
South Africa crushed Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the first quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 133 in 37.2 overs. Imran Tahir was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas with figures of 4 for 26 in 8.2 overs.
In reply, led by a 94-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, South Africa coasted to a nine-wicket win with 192 balls to spare.
That defeat not only ended Sri Lanka’s campaign at the 2015 World Cup, but it also bid adieu to one of the best partnerships that that game of cricket has ever seen in Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. This was Jayawardene’s final international assignment while Sangakkara has announced that he will quit international cricket after the India Test series in August. Sangakkara will only be playing Tests from now on.
